Accessibility Equipment

What is Accessibility Equipment?

Accessibility Equipment is a range of products designed to remove access barriers for persons with physical challenges. These barriers include stairs, raised building entrances and steep inclines that prevent access to public buildings as well as residences. Accessibility Equipment offers an effective way to eliminate access barriers in a variety of new and existing structures including residences, churches, offices, schools, libraries and other public buildings. Both cost effective and space efficient, accessibility equipment is an ideal access solution when installation of conventional elevators or ramps is not feasible due to space or budgetary constraints.

Residential & LU/LA Elevators

Similar to passenger elevators, residential elevators are a space-efficient and affordable access solution that provides convenience as well as increased resale value for homeowners.

Designed for use in public buildings, Limited Use/Limited Application (LU/LA) elevators are similar to residential elevators, but are limited by size, capacity, speed and distance of travel.

Codes & Standards:The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards for residential elevators can be found in ASME A17.1 Part V, while standards for LU/LA elevators can be found in ASME A17.

Inclined Platform Lifts

Inclined Platform (wheelchair) Lifts consist of a platform that travels along a guide rail on straight or curving staircases. Designed to access two or more landings, inclined platform lifts can be used both indoors and outdoors, in new or existing structures. In addition to wheelchair users, Inclined Platform Lifts can accommodate persons who have difficulty negotiating stairs.

Common Inclined Platform Lift installations in public buildings include schools, offices, restaurants, libraries and churches. In residences, Inclined Platform Lifts are often used to access a basement or second floor. The Americans with Disabilities Act recognizes the value of inclined platform lifts as a viable access solution when the installation of conventional elevators or ramps is not feasible.

The Canadian Standard, Lifts for Persons with Disabilities, can be found in CSA B355.

Stairway Chairlifts

Stairway Chairlifts consist of a chair assembly unit that travels along a track or rail that is mounted to a staircase. Typically installed in residences, stairway chairlifts provide access between two connecting floors, eliminating the need for homeowners to relocate.

Codes & Standards:  The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards for stairway chairlifts can be found in ASME A18.1. The Canadian Standard, Lifts for Persons with Disabilities, can be found in CSA A355.

Vertical Platform LIfts

Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, Vertical Platform Lifts are a freestanding access device designed to accommodate up to750 lbs. Cost effective and space efficient, Vertical Platform Lifts require less space than ramps and are often less expensive to install.

Common Vertical Platform Lift installations include residences, public buildings, schools, libraries and churches. The American s with Disabilities Act recognizes the value of vertical platform lifts as a viable access solution for new and existing structures when the installation of conventional elevators or ramps is not feasible.
